Duluth, GA Wrongful Death Lawyer | Traffic Fatalities in Drunk Driving

I wrote about drunk driving and wrongful death in an article I posted not too long ago, but I was reminded of the issues of drunk driving again as the U.S. Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx launched the “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” crackdown earlier this morning.  Data from the National Highway Traffic and Safety Administration (NHTSA) shows that every 3 hours, an accident involving alcohol-impaired driver takes the life of someone who was not driving drunk.  More data from the NHTSA translates this as more than a third of the victims of accidents involving drunk drivers not being the drunk drivers.  Furthermore, in 2011, 9,878 people were killed in accidents involving alcohol-impaired drivers, which accounted for roughly a third (31%) of all traffic fatalities in the United States.

These statistics are a reminder that drunk driving affects not only the driver, but others on the road as well—not to mention the fact that drunk driving remains to be a huge problem on our roads.

I’d also like to take some time to point out that not only is alcohol-impaired driving illegal, so is alcohol-impaired cycling.   I mentioned this is an article I posted last month about wrongful death in bicycle accidents and how a Duluth, GA bicycle accident lawyer can help you with your claim.

Foxx seems to be launching this safety campaigns in hopes of raising more awareness of the issues with drunk driving and creating safer roads for all drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians.  The NHTSA website states that more than 10,000 law enforcement officers will be cracking down on drunk driving across the country from August 16 to September 2.
