Duluth, GA Wrongful Death Attorney | Drunk Driving and Wrongful Death

With the 4th of July coming up in a few days, I wanted to talk about the dangers of drunk driving.  It’s a big holiday–a day when many of us gets to unwind with friends and family, probably over some good barbecue and (at least) a couple cold ones.

Unfortunately, however, drunk driving is a huge problem nationwide.  In a monetary scope, accidents involving alcohol-impaired driving call for more than an $51 billion each year.  Furthermore, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there were more than 10,000 fatalities due to accidents involving alcohol-impaired driving in 2010, which accounts for nearly a third of all traffic fatalities in the U.S.  It is also important to note that young people (ages 21-24) are the most at risk as 34% of all drivers with a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) with 0.08% or higher involved in a fatal accident in 2010 were of that age group.

Of course, drunk driving isn’t only an issue on holidays.  As the CDC points out, nearly 30 people are killed everyday from accidents involving alcohol-impaired driving.  Similar to the consequences of distracted driving, the most difficult thing about traffic deaths resulting from drunk driving is that they are completely avoidable.  Again, the responsibility lies in us as the driver to minimize our risks as well as the risks of other drivers and know when it is unsafe to get behind the wheel.
