Dallas, GA Car Accident Lawyer | Car Accidents and Distracted Driving

I touched on distracted driving earlier this week when I wrote about teen drivers.  Teen drivers are the worst offenders of distracted driving, but they’re not alone.

Distracted driving refers to doing any kind of activity that can distract you when you’re behind the wheel.  For example, eating, talking on the phone, grooming, and using your GPS are all different types of distractions that keep you from focusing on the task at hand.  Of course, the biggest distraction is arguably texting.  Texting while driving is particularly dangerous because it distracts you cognitively, visually, and manually.  What I mean by this is when you’re texting, you’re thinking of something other than driving, you’re looking at something that is not the road, and you’re handling something that isn’t the steering wheel of your vehicle.  The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) shares that taking part in a visual-manual distraction (such as reaching for a phone or texting) raises the risk of an accident by three times.  Additionally, in 10% of crashes that resulted in injury were distraction-affected crashes.  Perhaps the worst part about distraction-affected accidents is that these accidents were very much avoidable.  I wrote about distracted driving in an article I posted a few months ago about the relationship between distracted driving and wrongful death, and how hiring a Dallas, GA wrongful death lawyer can be beneficial to your claim.  But, simply put, if the driver is focused on the road ahead of him (or her), the driver can react better to different situations playing out on the road, and the driver, himself (or herself) is not being a safety hazard as he or she is aware of what is going on on the road.
